Chateau Le Pin 1993
฿99,139
Jacques Thienpont purchased this barely two-hectare parcel in Catusseau in 1979, and a shortage of tank capacity forced him to complete malolactic fermentation inside new oak barrels — an accident that became the defining technical signature of Le Pin's silky, round house style, and one of the first instances of the technique in Bordeaux. The seven contiguous plots sit on the central Pomerol plateau, where gravel-and-sand topsoil gives way to deep iron-rich clay (crasse de fer), a 'hot' soil profile that accelerates ripening and drives vines to root deep into mineral reserves, concentrating fruit at yields rarely above 30 hl/ha. Grapes are hand-harvested and fermented in seven temperature-controlled stainless steel vats of 15–42 hl, enabling true parcel-by-parcel micro-vinification; all cellar movement is by gravity. Aging runs 18–24 months in 100% new 225-litre French oak barriques, with individual barrels blended only at bottling. The 1993 vintage in Bordeaux was cool and rain-affected, producing wines of leaner structure than the surrounding decade — at Le Pin, the iron-clay subsoil's moisture retention and the estate's obsessive selection across fewer than 700 cases would have moderated the vintage's dilution risk. Now over three decades old, this bottle occupies the fully mature drinking window where Merlot from deep crasse de fer resolves into tertiary complexity.
