Joseph Drouhin Beaujolais Villages
฿1,000
Founded in 1880 by Joseph Drouhin and now stewarded by the fourth generation — Frédéric, Véronique, Philippe, and Laurent — Maison Joseph Drouhin built its reputation on a singular conviction: terroir transparency over extraction. That philosophy, most visible in the Côte d'Or Grand Crus, extends without compromise to this Beaujolais Villages cuvée.
Beaujolais Villages draws from the granite and schist-dominant soils of the northern Beaujolais hills, where shallow topsoil over fractured bedrock forces Gamay roots deep, producing fruit with tighter structure and more mineral tension than the clay-heavy southern plains. The elevated terrain moderates ripening, preserving the natural acidity that defines the appellation's freshness.
Drouhin vinifies this 100% Gamay with the same low-intervention discipline applied across the portfolio: indigenous yeast fermentation, minimal extraction to protect the grape's inherent red-fruit transparency, and élevage decisions driven by tasting evaluation rather than fixed protocol. Oak is used sparingly at this level, preserving primary fruit character.
The transgression here is deliberate restraint: where most Beaujolais Villages is rushed to market for carbonic freshness, Drouhin's house style imposes a Burgundian patience — the result sits closer to a light Pinot Noir in structure than to a typical Gamay. Drink now through 2–3 years for peak vibrancy.
