When Charles Stewart Howard launched Chivas Regal in 1909 as a 25-year-old blend — at a time when no competitor carried an age statement at all — he effectively invented the premium blended Scotch category. That founding logic, malt volume over grain economy, still governs every expression. The heart malt is Strathisla, drawn from a distillery in Keith, Speyside, operating continuously since 1786 — the oldest in the Scottish Highlands — whose process water filters through granite from the Broomhill Spring roughly one mile away. Strathisla's notably short-necked pot stills allow heavier vapours to rise into the spirit, producing a full-bodied, generously textured new make that anchors the blend's characteristic creaminess. Fermentation runs in traditional wooden washbacks rather than stainless steel, providing thermal insulation for a steady, flavour-building two-day ferment. Component whiskies are matured in a combination of ex-bourbon American oak and ex-Oloroso sherry European oak casks, with grain whisky supplied by Strathclyde Distillery in the Lowlands and additional malts from Longmorn, The Glenlivet, Miltonduff, Braeval, and Allt-a-Bhainne. What sets Crystalgold apart within the range is its positioning as a no-age-statement expression designed to foreground the Speyside malt character without the structural weight of the 12-year minimum. Bottled at 40% ABV, it delivers the house's orchard-fruit and heather-honey signature in a lighter, more immediate register.
