Lagavulin 12 Year Old Special Releases 2024 (700 ml)
฿7,099
When Peter Mackie absorbed the adjacent Malt Mill operation in 1908, its squat pear-shaped pot stills were folded into Lagavulin's still house — and those same proportions survive in the four stills running today, a lineage that directly shapes the 12 Year Old's character. Lagavulin fills its wash stills to 95% capacity — against an industry norm of 80–85% — and runs the spirit distillation for up to nine hours, the slowest on Islay, with downward-angled lyne arms that further suppress reflux. The result is the heaviest, most phenol-dense new-make on the island: barley peated to 35–38 PPM at Port Ellen Maltings, with congeners that would be stripped away at any other distillery retained intact. Water descends from Lochan Sholum, ~200 m above sea level on peat-rich Bheinn Sholum, flowing brown through the peat beds before reaching the mash tun — rights secured by Mackie through 19th-century litigation. The 12 Year Old Special Release matures exclusively in refill American oak ex-bourbon casks in dunnage warehouses sited directly on Lagavulin Bay, where Atlantic sea-spray penetrates the stone walls and imprints a maritime iodine register that inland maturation cannot replicate. Bottled at cask strength (typically 56–58% ABV), unchillfiltered, no caramel addition — the antithesis of the standard 16 Year Old's filtered, colour-adjusted presentation — this annual release is the only format in which Lagavulin's full phenolic architecture reaches the glass unmediated.
