When Shinjirō Torii lit the stills at Yamazaki in 1923 — at the misty confluence of the Katsura, Uji, and Kizu rivers on the southwestern fringe of Kyoto — he drew water from the same aquifers that tea master Sen no Rikyū had prized four centuries earlier. One hundred years on, this anniversary release commemorates that founding act with the most Mizunara-forward iteration of Yamazaki 18 the distillery has produced for general release.

The site sits at roughly 25 metres elevation in a warm, humid microclimate that accelerates maturation relative to highland distilleries — the soft, low-mineral river-fed water dissolving oak compounds with unusual efficiency. Those conditions make extended Mizunara contact particularly expressive: Japanese Mizunara oak (Quercus mongolica), so porous it demands specialist cooperage and is used almost nowhere else in world whisky, imparts sandalwood, kyara incense, and agarwood aromatics that are chemically distinct from any European or American oak regime.

Distillation at Yamazaki runs through pot stills of deliberately varied shapes — squat, tall, and ball-necked — using both direct-fire and indirect heat, with worm-tub and shell-and-tube condensers in parallel, all to generate the breadth of malt styles the 'Tsukuriwake' philosophy demands. Fermentation spans 64–80 hours across Oregon pine wooden washbacks and stainless-steel vessels with multiple yeast strains. The 18-year age statement draws on American white oak ex-bourbon, Oloroso sherry casks, and a meaningfully elevated Mizunara component — the proportion of Mizunara increasing at each tier above Yamazaki 12.

What separates this 100th Anniversary edition within the Yamazaki 18 lineage is its commemorative positioning: a single-distillery expression bottled to mark the centennial of Japanese whisky itself, from the house whose Sherry Cask 2013 was named World's Best Whisky by Jim Murray's Whisky Bible — the release that triggered the global Japanese whisky boom.
