Malt components draw from Yamazaki (25 m elevation, soft aquifer water fed by the Katsura, Uji, and Kizu rivers; warm, humid microclimate; pot stills of varied shapes and condensers) and Hakushu (708 m in the Southern Japanese Alps; granite-filtered water; wooden washbacks retaining heat in cool mountain air; lactobacillus-influenced fermentation). Chita grain whisky — corn-dominant, column-distilled to ~94% ABV on the Aichi Peninsula — forms the structural backbone of the blend, aged across American white oak ex-bourbon and Spanish oak sherry casks. What distinguishes Special Reserve within the Suntory blended range is its positioning as the house's original prestige blend before Hibiki was introduced — a deliberate bridge between the approachable Kakubin and the full Mizunara-influenced complexity of the Hibiki tier.
