US*1 Sour Mash (700 ml)
฿฿
Michter's traces its American whiskey lineage to a Pennsylvania distillery founded in 1753, but the modern operation distills in Louisville, Kentucky, where the brand rebuilt its identity around a single guiding principle: spend more on production than the margin typically allows. The US*1 Sour Mash is the expression that most directly reflects that ethos — it is neither legally a bourbon nor a rye, because Michter's deliberately blends grain bills across those categories to achieve a specific flavor target, then ages the spirit in new charred American oak barrels before transferring it to previously used bourbon barrels for a secondary maturation period.
That two-cask sequence is the defining technical move: the first barrel builds structure and vanilla-caramel character from fresh char, while the used barrel softens the wood extraction and integrates the spirit without adding further tannin load. The whiskey is heat-cycled in climate-controlled warehouses to accelerate oak interaction, and bottled at 43% ABV without chill filtration, preserving the natural oils that carry the mid-palate texture. The result sits in a category of one — a sour mash whiskey that carries bourbon warmth but with a rounder, less assertive oak frame than a straight bourbon of comparable age.
