The Glenrothes
The Glenrothes 2001 (700 ml)
฿3,649
When Berry Bros. & Rudd pioneered vintage-dated single malt releases from Glenrothes in 1993, they reframed Scotch whisky as a cellarable, harvest-specific product — a format this 2001 distillation represents before Edrington controversially retired it in 2017. The distillery sits beside the Burn of Rothes at the foot of the Mannoch Hills, drawing production water exclusively from four private on-estate springs naturally filtered through volcanic bedrock — a geological signature that contributes to the notably clean, mineral-edged new make. In the still house, tall copper pot stills fitted with oversized boiling balls are run at approximately half the flow rate of comparable Speyside operations, maximising copper reflux and producing a bright, estery spirit from a hearts cut representing less than 20% of total distillate. Maturation leans heavily on first-fill sherry-seasoned butts of European and American oak sourced from Jerez, held in traditional dunnage warehouses, building the house's characteristic dried-fruit weight and deep amber colour — achieved without added caramel. What distinguishes this expression categorically is its vintage identity: a fixed distillation year rather than an age statement, meaning the whisky was released only when the distillery's team judged it mature, not when a calendar dictated. Bottled without chill-filtration, the 2001 retains the full texture that Glenrothes's oily, slow-distilled spirit is built to deliver.
