Distilleria Vecchio Amaro Del Capo (700 ml)
฿฿
Caffo Distilleria, established in Reggio di Calabria in 1821, remains one of Southern Italy's oldest operating spirit houses. Vecchio Amaro del Capo draws from the Calabrian tradition of mountain herb foraging—gentian root, bergamot peel, and wild citrus dominate the botanical bill.
The base is a neutral grain spirit infused with a proprietary blend of herbs and roots via maceration. The exact recipe remains a Caffo family secret, though gentian, citrus peel, and local botanicals are documented constituents. No artificial colorants or additives; the deep amber hue derives from extended maceration and aging in neutral vessels. Bottled at 35% ABV.
Vecchio Amaro del Capo occupies the middle ground between digestivo and aperitivo—less aggressively bitter than Fernet-Branca, more structured than sweet vermouth. The bergamot-forward profile reflects Calabria's citrus heritage; the gentian backbone provides the characteristic amaro grip. Traditionally served neat as a post-meal digestif, or long with soda and ice as an aperitivo.
Drinking window: no expiration; amari improve with bottle age in cool, dark storage.
