Disaronno Originale has been produced in Saronno, Lombardy since at least the early 20th century, built on a recipe centred on absolute apricot kernel oil — not almonds — blended with alcohol, burnt sugar, and pure vanilla. Velvet is the cream expression of that same base, extending the liqueur with dairy cream to produce a pourable, dessert-weight texture at 17% ABV.
Saronno sits on the Lombard plain, far from vineyard terroir, but the production environment — a controlled distillery setting — matters here for emulsion stability and shelf consistency. The signature amaretto character comes from apricot kernel oil maceration, which delivers the almond-like aromatic profile without using tree nuts, a deliberate formulation choice that also makes the product nut-allergen-free by EU labelling standards.
What separates Velvet from the original Disaronno is the cream integration: the dairy component softens the burnt-sugar sharpness and rounds the vanilla, producing a liqueur that sits closer to Irish cream in body but retains the distinctly Italian marzipan-and-caramel aromatic signature no cream Irish whiskey base can replicate.
