Coutanseaux Aîné
Coutanseaux Aîné XO Cognac (700 ml)
฿20,400
Founded in 1767 by Louis Coutanseaux as a cooperage in Saintes, the house spent most of the 20th century dormant before Guillaume and Rodolphe Frerejean Taittinger — descendants of the Taittinger and Rouyer-Guillet lines — revived it in 2015 using century-old reserve stocks. That cooper lineage is not incidental: prolonged oak maturation is the house's primary artistic medium, not an afterthought.
Every eaux-de-vie in the XO blend originates exclusively from Grande Champagne, Premier Cru de Cognac — the cru with the highest chalk concentration among all six Cognac sub-regions. That deep chalk-and-limestone subsoil drives exceptional finesse and longevity in the distillate, producing a structural tension between floral delicacy and oxidative depth that lower-chalk crus cannot replicate.
Distillation is performed sur lies in traditional copper alambics charentais — a deliberate choice that extracts greater organoleptic richness from the lees before the double-distillation pass. The XO blends eaux-de-vie aged 15–25 years in French oak, well beyond the legal XO minimum, yielding pronounced rancio character alongside dried citrus peel, walnut, and candied ginger.
The house's most transgressive decision: no VS, VSOP, or young-aged expression exists in the range — the XO is the entry point, positioning Coutanseaux Aîné entirely outside the volume-driven Cognac market. The 40% ABV bottling delivers the age-driven complexity without dilution of the rancio signature.
