Coutanseaux Aîné Hors d'Age Cognac (700 ml)
฿63,600
Founded in 1767 by Louis Coutanseaux as a cooperage in Saintes, the house spent most of the 20th century dormant — its revival in 2015 by Guillaume and Rodolphe Frerejean Taittinger was made possible only because century-old reserve stocks had survived intact, some dating to 1916. That continuity of oak time is the entire argument of this Hors d'âge.
Every eau-de-vie in the blend originates exclusively from Grande Champagne, Premier Cru de Cognac — the highest-chalk subsoil of all six crus, where chalk, clay, and limestone converge to produce distillates of exceptional finesse and structural tension that reward extreme aging far beyond what sandier crus can sustain.
Distillation is performed sur lies in traditional copper alambics charentais, a deliberate choice that loads the base spirit with aromatic and organoleptic density before a single day in oak. The Hors d'âge then draws on French oak reserves aged a minimum of 40 years, extending to 120 years, yielding pronounced rancio, silky tannin architecture, and deep floral-spice complexity that the house's cooper origins treat as the primary artistic medium.
What no peer does: Coutanseaux Aîné offers no VS, VSOP, or standard-age expression — the Hors d'âge is the house's raison d'être, bottled in a hand-blown, individually unique glass decanter, making each 70cl a singular object. The drinking window is open now and extends indefinitely once decanted with care.
