40 Year Old.
Angove Family Winemakers established distillation at their Renmark operation in 1910, making St Agnes one of the oldest continuously operating brandy distilleries in the Southern Hemisphere. The X.O. 40 Year Old represents the ceiling of that unbroken lineage — a deliberate decision to hold spirit in barrel for four decades rather than release it younger for cash flow, a patience that defines the house's top tier.
The base wine is sourced from Barossa Valley fruit, where the region's warm continental climate and deep alluvial soils over clay produce high-sugar, full-bodied grapes that yield a rich, weighty new spirit. Distillation is conducted in traditional copper pot stills, a method St Agnes has maintained against the industry shift toward continuous column distillation, preserving congeners that sustain complexity across long maturation.
Forty years of aging in small oak casks drives profound oxidative concentration — water and alcohol slowly migrate through the stave, intensifying dried fruit, rancio, and wood spice character while softening the spirit's original fire. Bottled at 40% ABV, the expression sits at a measured proof that allows the aged complexity to read without heat domination.
Within Australian brandy, a 40-year age statement is virtually without peer commercially, placing this bottle in a category occupied by only the most patient Cognac and Armagnac houses.
