Riesling Rheingau Kabinett
฿฿
Story: Robert Weil's Rheingau holdings sit on the north bank of the Rhine, where Devonian slate bedrock—exposed in steep vineyard walls—has shaped Riesling character for centuries. The Kabinett classification signals a wine of delicate ripeness, not over-extraction.
Site & Terroir: The Rheingau's south-facing slopes benefit from reflected heat off the river and morning mists that slow ripening, preserving acidity. Slate soils impart mineral tension and a flinty undertone characteristic of the region's finest expressions.
Technique: Harvested at Kabinett ripeness (approximately 73–80 Oechsle), the fruit undergoes cool fermentation in stainless steel, allowing slow yeast activity that preserves aromatic volatiles. Residual sugar typically ranges 15–25 g/L, balanced by the wine's natural acidity. No oak aging—the focus remains on primary fruit and mineral expression.
Special Feature: Kabinett represents the lightest of Germany's Prädikat categories, a classification that demands precision: ripe enough for complexity, restrained enough to avoid heaviness. Robert Weil's expression exemplifies this balance—sweetness present but never cloying, acidity cutting through with clarity.
Drinking Window: Approachable now; will develop further complexity over 5–8 years.
