Sauvignon Blanc "Retreat"

Robertson Winery's "Retreat" Sauvignon Blanc originates from Robertson, a high-altitude inland valley in Western Cape positioned 160 km northeast of Cape Town. The subregion sits at 300–400 metres elevation on decomposed limestone and shale soils with diurnal temperature swings that extend ripening and preserve acidity—a geological signature that distinguishes Robertson from coastal Constantia and Elgin.

The fruit undergoes cool-temperature fermentation in stainless steel, a technique standard to Robertson's Sauvignon production, which arrests volatile aromatics and maintains the wine's herbaceous precision. No oak aging is typical for this expression, allowing the limestone minerality and varietal character to remain unobstructed. The 2023 vintage (or current release) reflects Robertson's consistent cool-climate profile: a wine built on acidity and mineral tension rather than tropical fruit weight.

Robertson limestone Sauvignon Blancs are historically undershadowed by Stellenbosch and Constantia bottlings, yet the terroir's cool nights and calcareous bedrock produce a distinctly herbaceous, flinty profile that rewards food pairing over solo sipping. This is a working wine, not a showpiece.
