The name 1522 reaches back to the year Apvril le Philipponnat first acquired vines in Aÿ — a founding act the house treats not as marketing but as a technical mandate: every decision in this prestige cuvée is made to produce a Champagne worthy of that five-century lineage. The 2009 vintage arrived after one of Champagne's warmest, most generous harvests of the decade, delivering exceptional phenolic ripeness and natural sugar accumulation rarely seen in the region.

Fruit is drawn from Philipponnat's own Grand and Premier Cru parcels on south- and southeast-facing chalk-and-limestone slopes at approximately 170 m ASL in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ and Aÿ. Pure chalk subsoil provides aggressive drainage and forces vine roots deep, concentrating extract while sustaining the mineral tension that prevents 2009's warmth from tipping into flatness.

Only first-press cuvée juice is used. Fermentation employs both stainless steel and neutral oak vessels, with partial malolactic fermentation preserving structural acidity while adding textural weight. In magnum format, the extended lees contact — well beyond standard NV minimums — slows autolysis and builds a denser, more complex bead. The Pinot Noir-dominant blend (the house typically runs 65–69% PN) gives the wine its characteristic broad-shouldered architecture.

What separates 1522 from virtually every prestige cuvée peer is Philipponnat's back-label transparency: base vintage, dosage level, and disgorgement date are all declared — a practice the house pioneered in 1996, long before the industry followed. The 2009, in magnum, is drinking at full maturity now and will hold comfortably through the late 2020s.
