Klein Constantia is one of the world's most historic wine estates, with a legacy dating back to 1685 when Simon van der Stel, the first Governor of the Cape, established the Constantia farm. Nestled on the upper foothills of the Constantiaberg mountain, the estate became legendary in the 18th and 19th centuries for its "Vin de Constance," a sweet wine favored by emperors and poets alike, including Napoleon Bonaparte and Jane Austen. After a period of decline, the estate was revived in the 1980s, focusing on restoring its former glory through a combination of tradition and modern expertise. Today, it stands as a benchmark for South African fine wine, blending centuries of heritage with a commitment to excellence and conservation.
The estate's unique terroir is defined by its cool maritime climate and ancient soils. Located just 10 kilometers from the ocean, the vineyards benefit from constant sea breezes that maintain freshness and acidity in the grapes while intensifying flavors. The vines are planted on steep slopes of 600-million-year-old decomposed granite, providing excellent drainage and mineral depth. Klein Constantia’s winemaking philosophy, led by winemaker Matthew Day, emphasizes restraint, elegance, and a symbiotic relationship with nature. By employing sustainable farming practices and minimal intervention in the cellar, the estate produces refined, terroir-driven wines that capture the distinct character of the Constantia Valley.
