"Howell Mountain" Cabernet Sauvignon

Duckhorn Vineyards established its Howell Mountain program to capture the distinctive character of this Napa subregion's volcanic terroir. Howell Mountain sits at 1,400–2,200 feet elevation on the eastern rim of Napa Valley, where volcanic ash and rocky soils combined with cooler nights and intense daytime sun create conditions that concentrate phenolic ripeness while preserving natural acidity.

This Cabernet Sauvignon is aged in French oak for 18 months, with a significant portion in new wood, allowing the wine to develop structure without overwhelming the fruit character derived from the site's mineral-rich soils. The high elevation and volcanic composition push the vintage toward darker berry expression and firm tannin architecture.

Howell Mountain Cabernets are known for their ability to age; this expression balances immediate approachability with the framework for 10–15 years of cellar development. The 2021 vintage benefits from moderate heat and balanced ripening conditions typical of the appellation.
