Cono Sur Single Vineyard Carmenere

−12%Cono Sur was founded in 1993 as an independent subsidiary of Concha y Toro with a mandate to push Chilean varieties beyond convention — and while the house built its reputation on Pinot Noir, its commitment to Carmenère at the single-vineyard level reflects the same terroir-first logic applied to Chile's most distinctive red grape. El Encanto estate (101 ha), dedicated to red varieties including Carmenère, Cabernet Franc, Grenache, and Carignan, sits within the Cachapoal Valley, where Andean-influenced soils and diurnal temperature swings slow ripening and preserve the variety's characteristic green-herb tension alongside dark fruit. The valley's position — closer to the Andes than coastal appellations — delivers well-drained alluvial soils and reliable sun exposure, conditions that push Carmenère toward full phenolic maturity without sacrificing freshness. Vinification follows temperature-controlled fermentation with French oak aging consistent with the Single Vineyard tier; the house's broader winemaking philosophy favors minimal intervention and screwcap closures (adopted 2002, a Chilean first) for aromatic preservation on select lines. What distinguishes this expression within the portfolio is its single-estate provenance — a deliberate break from the multi-valley blending that defines most Chilean Carmenère at this price tier. Drink now through 4–6 years for primary fruit and savory herb character at their most expressive.
