Harlan Estate The Maiden 2013

Bill Harlan withheld the estate's first three harvests — 1987, 1988, 1989 — judging them unworthy of release, a standard of self-imposed discipline that set the philosophical tone for every bottle that followed. The Maiden is the second wine of that same estate, built from the same 40 planted acres of 'The Tenderloin' on the eastern slopes of the Mayacamas Mountains, Oakville AVA.

Soils here are a mosaic of Napa Volcanics — hard lava and tuff weathering to clay-rich profiles in the upper blocks, fractured volcanic bedrock beneath residual sediments to the east, and Great Valley sandstones on the western slopes. Depths rarely exceed one foot, forcing roots deep and concentrating flavour. Elevation of 325–525 ft with a horseshoe topography delivers diurnal swings and mesoclimatic diversity that valley-floor Oakville simply cannot replicate.

The 2013 vintage — cool and foggy with below-average yields — produced 30 distinct vinifications aged independently before assemblage. Fermentation proceeded with indigenous yeasts in tronconical oak vats, pump-overs and hand punching kept gentle to preserve skin integrity across a 30–35-day maceration. Aging ran in French oak barriques (Taransaud and Sylvain cooperages), unfined and unfiltered. Each bottle carries a sequential serial number and RFID anti-counterfeiting chip — a level of provenance infrastructure with no peer in California. Dark, brooding, and structured: graphite, violet smoke, black fruit, and licorice with the bay-laurel eucalyptus note native to the site. Drink 2026–2055+.
