Blandy's Verdelho "5 Years Old"
฿2,370
Blandy's Verdelho 5 Years Old originates from Madeira, the Portuguese Atlantic island whose volcanic terroir and subtropical climate have defined fortified wine production since the 15th century. Vines planted on steep, basalt-rich slopes at elevations between 200–400 metres face persistent trade winds that cool fermentation and concentrate fruit acidity.
Verdelho—a white variety prized for its natural tartness—undergoes fortification with neutral spirit post-fermentation, then oxidative aging in seasoned wooden casks for a minimum of 5 years. The Madeira estufagem system (controlled heating) accelerates oxidation, browning the wine and developing caramelized, dried-fruit complexity. This expression avoids the highest heat tiers, preserving linear acidity beneath amber colour.
The special feature is Verdelho's structural austerity within the Madeira family: higher natural acidity than Tinta Negra or Bual, and lower residual sugar than Malmsey, making it the driest and most food-forward of the traditional Madeira styles. At 5 years, it balances youthful citric edge with early caramel and oxidative depth.
Drink now through 2035. Madeira's fortification and oxidative process render it virtually indefinite once bottled.
