Compass Box Secrets of Smoke Blended Malt Scotch Whisky (700 ml)
฿8,589
When John Glaser founded Compass Box in 2000, he did so without a still — deliberately. The house operates as a precision blending atelier in Richmond, London, sourcing and re-maturing casks from named Scottish distilleries rather than distilling a drop itself. Secrets of Smoke is a blended malt built on the peated bedrock of Islay, drawing its structural weight from Caol Ila and Laphroaig — two distilleries whose coastal, peat-cut water sources and heavily kilned malts produce phenolic profiles of fundamentally different character: Caol Ila's medicinal, oily smoke versus Laphroaig's tar-and-seaweed intensity. These Islay components are matured in refill hogsheads and ex-bourbon American oak barrels, a deliberate choice that keeps wood influence subordinate and lets phenolic expression dominate. The blend is bottled at 46% ABV, non-chill-filtered, and without added colouring — a production standard Compass Box holds across its range, yielding a texture and natural hue that most commercial peated blends sacrifice for shelf consistency. What distinguishes this expression within the peated Scotch category is the blending-house model itself: no single-distillery constraint, no vintage pressure, and the freedom to balance Islay smoke against medium-peated Highland parcels for architectural precision no individual distillery can replicate.
