Douglas Laing & Co., founded in Glasgow in 1948, built its Provenance range as a deliberate act of transparency in a category long dominated by opacity — every label prints the source distillery, cask number, cask type, and both distillation and bottling dates. This bottling draws from Ledaig, the heavily peated expression produced at Tobermory Distillery on the Isle of Mull, where Atlantic exposure and the island's maritime microclimate press salt and coastal brine into the spirit during maturation. Mull's geology — ancient Lewisian gneiss and basalt — contributes to the mineral, almost medicinal edge that distinguishes Ledaig from mainland peated malts. Matured in a single refill hogshead (ex-bourbon) for 7 years, the used wood allows Ledaig's phenolic character to remain front and centre rather than being absorbed into heavy oak extraction. Bottled at 46% ABV, non-chill-filtered, with no added colouring — the full-transparency protocol applied across every Provenance release. What sets this apart: at 7 years, Ledaig's peat is still raw and coastal rather than integrated, a profile most distillery official bottlings deliberately age past — making this an unrepeatable single-cask snapshot of the spirit at its most assertive. Yield is limited to the single cask, typically 300–850 bottles, with no repeat release possible.
