Kishu Akai Umeshu (1.8 L)
฿฿
Nakano BC's Kishu Akai Umeshu originates from Wakayama Prefecture's Kishu region, historically Japan's premier plum-growing zone. The terroir—warm coastal climate with well-drained volcanic soils—produces umeboshi-grade plums with concentrated acidity and dense flesh.
This expression employs whole red plums macerated in a neutral spirit base, a traditional umeshu production method. The maceration period allows stone fruit phenolics and organic acids to leach into the spirit, building natural sweetness through sugar addition balanced against the plum's inherent tartness. The 1.8 L format suggests household consumption in Japan, where umeshu serves as both digestif and cooking ingredient.
The red plum variant (akai) carries more tannin structure than white plum expressions, lending subtle grip alongside the fruit's primary character. Bottled at accessible ABV, this liqueur bridges aperitif and dessert applications without the cloying profile of mass-market versions.
Best consumed chilled or over ice; also functions as a base for highballs with soda or sparkling water, a common preparation in Japanese home entertaining.
