Kitaoka Honten
Yatagarasu Yoshino Monogatari La France (1.8 L)
฿3,000
Kitaoka Honten has brewed in Yoshino-cho since 1868, when the seventh-generation head Sojuro consolidated four centuries of family commerce into sake production exclusively — a decision that also set the stage for the brewery's later botanical liqueur programme. Yoshino sits at the entrance to Yoshino-Kumano National Park in southern Nara, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape whose mountain streams supply the brewery's water source: Oku-Yoshino Forest Water (奥吉野の森林水), drawn from deep forest catchments, characterised by low iron content and a soft mineral profile that carries delicate infused aromatics without interference. The Yoshino Monogatari La France expression applies the same botanical infusion method used across the brewery's fruit and flower liqueur range — seasonal fruit steeped in alcohol with sugar syrup — here centred on La France pear, a Western variety prized in Japan for its intensely perfumed, buttery flesh. What distinguishes this expression within Kitaoka's portfolio is its format: the 1.8 L isshobin (一升瓶), the traditional large-format sake bottle, applied to a fruit liqueur — an unusual crossover that signals the brewery's intent to position this as a table-sharing, food-pairing product rather than a cocktail ingredient. As a non-vintage liqueur, consistency across batches is the production standard; serve well-chilled or over ice to preserve the pear's aromatic lift.
