Fernet Branca (1 L)
฿฿
Fernet-Branca was formulated in Milan in 1845 by Bernardino Branca, who registered the recipe as a medicinal digestivo — a legal classification that protected the exact 27-botanical formula from replication and remains unchanged to this day. That locked formula is the product's founding transgression: in an era of constant reformulation, nothing has moved.
The botanical bill sources ingredients across four continents: myrrh from Ethiopia, gentian root from the Alps, rhubarb from China, galangal, chamomile, saffron, and peppermint among the disclosed components. The precise ratios are held by a single family member per generation. Maceration occurs in neutral vessels before blending, and the liquid rests in Slavonian oak barrels for a minimum of 12 months — long enough to round the sharper volatile edges without softening the structural bitterness.
Bottled at 45% ABV without chill-filtration, the full-litre expression delivers the same concentration as the standard 750 ml — no dilution, no reformulation for market. What separates Fernet-Branca from lighter amari is the dominance of gentian and myrrh over any sweetening agent: sugar content sits at roughly 80 g/L, low for the category, leaving bitterness unmasked. Serve neat at room temperature or over a single large ice cube.
