Blaufränkisch

A highly esteemed Austrian red making spicy, precise, earthy, deeply coloured wines — especially in Burgenland, the warmest Austrian wine region.

About the grape

Blaufränkisch is a highly esteemed Austrian variety — probably of Austrian or Hungarian origin — that can make spicy, precise, earthy, deeply coloured reds, especially in Burgenland, the warmest of the Austrian wine regions. It is also the leading red grape in Hungary, where it is called kékfrankos, and is grown in Washington State under its German name, Lemberger. DNA analysis indicates it is probably the progeny of gouais blanc. It is one parent of zweigelt, the cross that is now among Austria's most widely planted reds.
