Swartland
South Africa's revolution region, leading the old-vine, minimal-intervention movement with Chenin Blanc, Syrah, and Grenache.
About the region
Swartland (meaning "black land," for its indigenous renosterbos shrub) lies northwest of Cape Town in the Western Cape. Once dismissed as a bulk-wine and wheat-farming zone, it has undergone a dramatic transformation since the early 2000s, driven by a new generation of winemakers committed to old-vine Chenin Blanc, Mediterranean red varieties, and minimal-intervention winemaking. The Swartland Independent Producers guild champions site-specific, low-yield viticulture. Key figures include Eben Sadie (Sadie Family), Adi Badenhorst, Chris and Andrea Mullineux, and David Sadie (Lammershoek). The region's granite, shale, and schist soils, combined with a warm Mediterranean climate tempered by coastal breezes, produce wines of remarkable depth and complexity.
