Sauternes

Bordeaux appellation producing the world's greatest botrytised sweet wines from Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadelle.

About the region

Sauternes is a prestigious appellation within Bordeaux's Graves district, renowned for producing lusciously sweet white wines through noble rot (Botrytis cinerea). The confluence of the cold Ciron tributary with the warmer Garonne creates morning mists that encourage botrytis development, concentrating sugars and aromatics in the grapes. Chateau d'Yquem, classified Premier Cru Supérieur in the 1855 Classification, stands as the benchmark. Other top estates include Suduiraut, Climens (in neighbouring Barsac), Rieussec, and Coutet. The wines combine honeyed richness with vibrant acidity, enabling decades of cellar development.
